As the county seat and the largest city of El Paso County, Colorado Springs is home to more than 479,000 people. Colorado Springs served as the capital of the Colorado Territory for a short time, from November 5, 1861 to August 14, 1862
The first European settlements in the area began in the early 19th century. By the time of the Colorado Gold Rush of the 1850s, a number of people were living in the area. Saw mills, mines, farming, and cattle raising were among the more common means of earning a living.
Throughout the latter 19th century and well into the 20th century, Colorado Springs enjoyed consistent population growth. The establishment of the United States Air Force Academy north of the city in 1958 provided opportunities for continued growth. Since the middle of the 20 the century, the city has become the home of two dozen headquarters for different sporting organizations and bodies. They include USA Swimming, USA Hockey, and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee.
